How matrix questions work
The rows list the items, such as "Price", "Support", and "Ease of use". The columns hold a shared scale, such as Very poor to Very good. The respondent selects one answer in each row.
Example
A product survey asks "How would you rate the following?" with five features in rows and a 5-point scale from Very unsatisfied to Very satisfied in columns.
Pros and cons
- Pro: one question collects many ratings, and the results are easy to compare.
- Pro: respondents learn the scale once.
- Con: large grids feel like hard work and add to survey fatigue.
- Con: respondents may straightline, which means they choose the same answer in every row.
- Con: grids are hard to use on phones.
Keep a matrix to a small number of rows, and break long grids into smaller groups.
Matrix questions in FormFlux
FormFlux does not have a matrix field. Ask each item as its own rating or radio button question instead. In conversational mode each item gets its own screen, which works better on phones than a grid.
