Multi-Step Form

A multi-step form splits its fields across several screens, with a progress indicator, instead of showing every field on one long page.

How multi-step forms work

The form is divided into steps. Each step has one field or a small group of related fields. The respondent completes a step, then clicks Next. A progress bar or step counter shows how far they are.

A conversational form is one kind of multi-step form, with exactly one question in each step.

Example

An application form has three steps: contact details, work history, and documents. Each step is short, and the respondent knows that only three steps are needed.

Why it matters

A long form on one page can look like too much work, and people leave before they start. Steps make the same form look smaller. You can also put easy questions first, so people are already committed when they reach harder ones.
