How to calculate form completion rate
There are two common versions:
- From starts: submissions divided by starts, multiplied by 100. A start is the first interaction with a field.
- From views: submissions divided by views, multiplied by 100.
If 400 people start a form and 300 submit it, the completion rate from starts is 75%. Always say which version you use, because the two numbers can be very different.
What changes the rate
- The number of fields, and how much effort each one takes.
- Questions that feel too personal too early, such as a phone number.
- How the form works on a phone.
- Error messages that are hard to understand.
Why it matters
The completion rate tells you if the form itself loses people. If many visitors start the form but few finish it, look at the questions where people stop.
